» Guaranteed sightings I don't think so Visibility explained.

Because our information categorised structured in a database we run risk presenting information seems exact in terms mathematics information we present exact in any way main reason we dealing natural events animals events animals can hardly ever predicted We can only best-guess use guesstimates tell where can find certain species.

I was reminded again last week when diving near Hin Muang Hin Daeng coast Koh Lanta Thailand sites frequently rated top 10 dive sites in world.
sounded promising especially since Manta sightings sort guaranteed recently Whalesharks had spotted consecutive dives.

There was only one factor could mess up did: Poor visibility
Think chances seeing an animal freely roams water doesn't stick a reef when radius vision somewhere 15-30 meters we consider 30 meters very good viz just so happen in right spot (meaning right side/end reef beach rock whatever) right time looking in right direction (And we talking a 3-dimensional area) able see far underwater Consider odds visibility being good know affected (among others):
- Water temperature one usually doesn't vary much there occasional thermo clines sudden warm currents where water goes blurry.
- Currents hasn't in situation where even experienced divemaster was surprised a sudden change in current Currents affect how water bottom particles moving can greatly influence visibility.
- Tides moon affect currents.
- Plankton plankton in water usually provides best chance seeing plankton eaters (e.g Manta Rays Whalesharks) Unfortunately plankton also greatly reduces visibility.
- Light a clear sunny sky overcast makes a great deal difference When an occasional cloud covers sun immediately reduces visibility See next one.
- Time day affects angle sunlight can penetrate water A sun stands straight above head give much light underwater thereby improving visibility a sun stands horizon.
- Rain When diving near land mouth a river river delta rain often causes sediments in rivers streams flow sea ocean thereby reducing visibility That's one reasons why in most tropic areas in rainy season most dive operators closed.
- others There factors influencing viz I can't think right now.

Take consideration apart chance animals staying around when bubble blowing divers worse noisy boat engines around you'll see chance being unlucky slim I've very probably real close Manta's maybe even a Whaleshark last week visibility was quite poor (5 - 10 meters) so probably knew exactly where I was trailing my whereabouts staying a convenient 15 meters away I was peering murky blue spot something may above below any other side I never know.

one people saw a Whaleshark passing sitting bottom clearing mask second dive an open water course I can only say one lucky dude might happen again a long time because around because just might miss pass overhead fiddling BCD regulator staring a nudibranch.

So says 90-100% probability encounter in our pages then we talking probability animals being around chance looking in right direction actually seeing
Just so know hey a nudibranch can really nice Different nice!

» Slow connections

It seems take a long time get a response server.
When there a lot people visiting website the time search functions query database server might difficulty processing requests a hobby project so can understand we limit costs cannot afford expensive hosting options our website patient when website Hopefully we can upgrade hardware in future.

» Slow connections

A lot information downloaded might take a long time because might fastest connection.
For case we a LIGHT version website (http://light.divestart.com) doesn't any pictures in apart icons indicate probability encounter In order keep light we had sacrifice functions well search bar use advanced search in version find divespots.

» (Advanced) search

      Keywords return a result!
Because structure data amount data workload a keyword search server (it go records words find a match !) we stripped irrelevant words in presented information course in data keyword search scans matches Irrelevant words common words "in etc Searching type words simply return too results way we can keep search quick without compromising in returned results know words filtered return a result we listed words below: Filtered words: "a ago almost along also am an answer any anybody anywhere aren't around ask bad before being best better big can can't com come could couldn't day did didn't does don't down due else even ever every everybody everyone far few find get go going gone good got had haven't her here hers him his home how href I in isn't know large less little looking look me most much my near need net never new news none nothing now off offer offers often old one once only org other our ours out over page question rather recent see she should sites small so something sometime somewhere take true thank theirs then there though thus time times too under until untrue up use users version very via want was way we web well when where whole whom why wide without world worse worst www yes yet yours"

» Tips & Hints

      Using search wide narrow
When advanced search form we recommend try a wide search first so specify little criteria possible before narrowing down results way can avoid missing a good spot criteria smaller chance getting divebases back try avoid searching animals regions since put a heavy workload server.

» Tips & Hints

      Copy/paste text before submitting
When filling out forms in a browser (and applies everywhere internet) always a good idea copy/paste text in a text editor before pressing a submit button Especially when writing long stories can a real setback submission info doesn't work a connection times out a browser crashes fine input gone copy memory in a text editor first can easily copy form again later.

» Add / Delete / Change information

      Adding information (do's don'ts)
We rules adding information otherwise a mess despite good intentions everyone Stick fine: - Don't use CAPITALS titles names etc won't get extra attention write Most probably we change anyway small caps once we get bored we just delete information So help us write normal sentence style - specific possible Comments We best dive school in town database say yourself doesn't everybody claim Better state why really different others Think different courses accommodation etc - realistic possible Overstating probability animals being around get extra divers get divers very disappointed Only realistic information help diving community - complete possible provide information can think It's maybe just a little bit effort side worth a lot divers checking info - Use common sense Then we'll fine - Know we greatly appreciate help input A lot divers benefit able dive great creatures in turn benefit attention (hopefully) help survive because importance tourism.

» Definitions

      Probability encounter:
The chance might actually get see creature event underwater surface a tough one since guarantee can given any time an encounter why we one group positively encounter (0% think whale sharks in bathtub) rest arbitrary We think should possible give an indication probability encounter we (and should) also realize highly depends accuracy information provided other people Anyway we think a little bit information better information every bit helps 0% - There positively creatures kind in area encounter 0 > 60% - spotted there information whereabouts lucky see 60 > 90% - spotted regularly in area exact whereabouts unknown might see then again might Don't blame skipper go home unsuccessful 90 > 100% - Now we There a good chance encounter whereabouts known we still talking animals here so there saying up might decided lay low a guarantee given consider yourself unlucky encounter.
