I've very fond memories of the Gili Trawangan because of its beauty and how easy it was to spend a few hours in the water every day. I learnt how to free-dive there down to 10-15 metres... which is an important skill because we'd see 30-40 large turtles each time. That said, there is extensive coral destruction in many areas due to dynamite fishing and rumours from several people that the turtles were brought in to maintain tourist interest. Regardless, the islands provide a wonderful diversion for a week or two. |
