Divestart FAQ (Frequently Asked Questions)

The (Advanced) Search form fields explained.

[Back to advanced search]

Per field an explanation is given. For all the fields that are filled with an option that is not "Dont care" or that are not all unchecked or all checked (in case of checkboxes) the information will be part of the search string. This means that a combination of all these fields will have to result in a match. Therefore it is advisable to start with few selection criteria and add more if too many results are returned.

The different fields are to be used in the following way:

Marinelife (What): This dropdown list gives you the choice to narrow your search down to either a species (indicated with ... All) or a subspecies. The results will have at least this animal listed as marinelife for that location. In the advanced form, you can select multiple species by holding down the CTRL key (Windows). Above the marinelife select list you can 'check' whether you want to see the results where any of the species listed are in the divebases, or all of the selected species have to be found per divebase.

Location (Where): Please select a geographical area where the divebase should be located. When selecting a continent, all divebases in the underlying countries that match all other conditions will be returned in the result. In the advanced search you can indicate multiple countries or regions by holding down the CTRL key (Windows) while clicking the countries.

Months (When): Please uncheck any months that you want excluded from the search result. The result will be based on the presence of the selected marinelife for those divebases where the probability of encounter is higher than zero in "any" of the selected months (as opposed to "all" of the selected months)

Dive conditions: Here you can leave checked all the conditions that you "at least" want to be available in the area of the divebase.

Average minimum water temperature: Please select the average minimum water temperature that you want to dive in. Please note that all divebases with a higher temperature will be included in the results, though limited by the next field, the maximum average water temperature.

Average maximum water temperature: Please select the average maximum water temperature that you want to dive in. Please note that all divebases with a lower temperature will be included in the results, though limited by the previous field, the minimum average water temperature.

Minimum average visibility: Please select what visibility you want at least to be at the divebases. Divebases with a higher visibility will be included in the result as well (if all other conditions apply).

Bottom composition: Here you can leave checked all the compositions that you "at least" want to be available in the area of the divebase.

Any keyword: Here you can type any keyword that you want included in the result. Please note that this will return all the divebases where the keyword is found, regardless of the previous set conditions!

PLEASE NOTE that if one of these criteria is not listed at a divebase, that divebase will not be included in the search result. So if you want a maximum dive depth in the result, and a divebase has no listings of any divesites, this divebase will not be included in the result.

Keywords that will not return a result!

Because of the structure of the data, the amount of data and the workload that a keyword search has on the server (it has to go through all the records and through all the words to find a match!!!), we have stripped irrelevant words. Not in the presented information of course, but in the data that the keyword search scans for matches. Irrelevant words are common words like "the", "and", "more", "in" etc. Searching for these type of words would simply return too many results. This way we can keep the search quick without compromising in the returned results. For you to know which words are filtered and that will not return a result, we have listed the words below:

Filtered words:
"a about after ago all almost along also am an and answer any anybody anywhere are aren't around as ask at bad be been before being best better between big but by can can't com come could couldn't day did didn't do does don't down due each either else even ever every everybody everyone far few find for found from get go going gone good got had has have haven't having her here hers him his home how however href I if in into is isn't it its know large less like little looking look made make many me more most much must my near need net never new news no none not nothing now of off offer offers often old on one once only or org other our ours out over page please question rather recent see she should sites small so some something sometime somewhere such take than true thank that the their theirs them then there these they this those though through thus time times to too under until untrue up upon use users version very via want was way we web well were what when where which who whole whom whose why wide will with within without world worse worst would www yes yet you your yours"
