Description:
Between Huahine and Bora Bora, the twin islands of Raiatea and Taha’a share a common lagoon.
Tahaa lived in the shadow of Raiatea, its larger, stronger and more important neighbor and was at times a pawn in struggles between Raiatea and the fierce rulers of Bora Bora.
The sister island of Raiatea was not yet the island of vanilla plantation.
Taha’a is accurately nicknamed “the vanilla island”, since three –quarters of French Polynesian product comes from here. Vanilla cultivation and more recently pearl farming are important activities.
The island is an undiscovered jewel, little known by tourists, only accessible by boat with a village atmosphere.
The main tourism attraction is the string of beautiful motus along the northern reef edge.
Taha’a is a quiet little place with a 70 km crushed-coral road winding around most of the coast. The population is concentrated in eight villages on the coast.
Tapuamu has the main wharf while Patio is the main town.
